Follow-Up: PM Carney Delivers Formal Statement on Wainwright Tragedy; Flags at Half-Mast as Canada Mourns

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a formal statement in Ottawa on Oct. 18 on the deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. He confirmed that four service members lost their lives and dozens more were seriously wounded, and that next of kin have been notified. 'What followed was one of the worst tragedies for the Forces on Canadian soil in peacetime,' Carney said. He has asked that flags on all federal buildings be flown at half-mast. Carney said the casualties included reservists and soldiers from Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry who had come from bases across the country to train at Wainwright. He asked senior officials on the ground — including Defence Minister David McGuinty, the emergency preparedness minister and Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland of the Canadian Army, joined by provincial ministers and officials — to provide a detailed briefing on Sunday afternoon, and he commended the close collaboration between all levels of government, saying he and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have been in regular contact since the previous evening. GSM previously reported that the military has released the names of the four dead and that 39 people were injured, 19 critically. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
