Austin Conducts 140-Acre Prescribed Burn to Restore Native Grasslands

Austin is a city in Travis County, Texas. Austin Water's Wildland Conservation Division conducted a prescribed burn on about 140 acres of the Water Quality Protection Lands on October 8. The city advised that smoke could be visible from 10 a.m. to sunset northeast of RR 3237, north of FM 150 and at points along the I-35 corridor, and asked travelers to stay alert.
The Water Quality Protection Lands program manages more than 35,000 acres tied to Edwards Aquifer recharge, Barton Springs and groundwater wells in Hays and Travis counties. Officials said prescribed fire mimics the natural fire cycle, reduces brush, restores native grasslands, lowers destructive wildfire risk and supports grassland birds, with trained city, county and partner-agency crews working under strict weather parameters.
