Boston Sues Federal Government to Restore $20 Million Street Grant

Boston is a city in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. The City of Boston filed a federal lawsuit on September 28 challenging the U.S. Department of Transportation's cancellation of a $20 million infrastructure grant. Awarded in 2022 through the RAISE program, the funding was to support a nearly $34 million redesign of three heavily traveled streets in Roxbury, including road repairs, wider sidewalks, and faster bus service. City lawyers argue the project's electric vehicle chargers accounted for less than 1 percent of total cost and that the city offered to drop them without success. Mayor Michelle Wu said the competitively won grant addresses long-needed neighborhood upgrades. The case, City of Boston v. Duffy, is docketed as No. 1:26-cv-14419 in Massachusetts federal court.
