McAvoy Scores in Season Debut, Minten Nets Two as Bruins Beat Sharks 6-3 for Third Straight Win
Boston is a city in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. The visiting Boston Bruins defeated the San Jose Sharks 6-3 at SAP Center in San Jose on Tuesday night, October 13, winning their third straight game and improving to 5-2-0. The Sharks fell to 3-3-0, losing their second straight and third in four games.
Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy made his season debut in the game. He had served a six-game suspension for slashing Buffalo Sabres forward Zach Benson during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference First Round in last season's playoffs, missing the first six games of this season. In his return, McAvoy scored at 18:43 of the first period off a pass from JJ Peterka to put Boston ahead 2-1, and he led all Bruins skaters with 24:41 of ice time.
Fraser Minten opened the scoring for Boston at 12:55 of the first period, and Jacob Trouba tied the game at 15:29 with his first goal since joining the Sharks. In the second period, Sharks rookie Ivar Stenberg tied the game at 5:48 with a power-play goal, the first of his NHL career; Matthew Poitras restored Boston's lead at 8:42, and Pavel Zacha made it 4-2 with three seconds left in the period. Macklin Celebrini cut the deficit to 4-3 with a power-play goal at 5:04 of the third, Minten scored his second goal of the game at 11:47, and Will Borgen added an empty-net goal at 18:18 for the 6-3 final.
Minten finished with two goals, Morgan Geekie had two assists, and goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves for Boston. For San Jose, Celebrini and Stenberg each had a goal and an assist, Dmitry Orlov collected two assists, and Yaroslav Askarov made 20 saves.
After the game, McAvoy said, "It was just fun to be playing again," and credited Peterka's pass on his goal. Bruins coach Marco Sturm said the performance was not the team's best and included too many turnovers, but that the Bruins found a way to win and to close out the road trip with two points.
