Charlotte Schedules Oct. 12 Hearing on Extending Data Center Moratorium

Saturday, October 10, 2026 · City · GSM News

Charlotte is a city in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The Charlotte City Council will hold a public hearing on October 12 on whether to extend the citywide pause on new data center development. The current 150-day moratorium, passed in June, expires November 5; an extension would keep the pause in place for 11 more months, through October 11, 2027, while the city studies effects on the power grid, water, land use and residents' utility bills.

City officials note that data centers are currently allowed by right in eight zoning districts, meaning they generally do not require individual City Council approval. Projects already in progress may continue during the moratorium, and a 19-person task force is studying possible regulations. Residents can sign up through the city website to speak at the hearing. City staff say the task force still needs time to consult experts and outside utilities such as Duke Energy on best practices, and that future rules may set different standards by data center size and type.
