Chicago Unveils School-Zone Traffic Safety Improvements Across the City

Friday, October 9, 2026 · City · GSM News

Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Transportation announced new school-zone traffic safety improvements on October 8 at Benjamin E. Mays Elementary Academy. The city said traffic fatalities have fallen 35 percent from their 2021 peak, and that its School Zone Program uses crash history, street conditions, school operations and community feedback to guide measures such as speed humps, pedestrian refuge islands, curb extensions, raised crosswalks and upgraded markings and signs.

In Englewood, the work benefits six schools and nearly 2,000 students, including speed humps and lane changes near Mays, a protected bike lane on Stewart Avenue, pedestrian refuge islands and curb extensions along 69th Street, and lower speed limits on surrounding neighborhood streets. The city said similar school-zone projects have also been completed this year in Albany Park, West Garfield Park, West Lawn and Edgewater.
