Chicago Council to Weigh $261 Million Settlement for 16 People Exonerated in Guevara Cases

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · City · GSM News

Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois. Chicago local media reported on October 14 that the Chicago City Council is expected to vote on Wednesday, October 14, on a proposed $261 million settlement for 16 people whose murder convictions were vacated in cases tied to former Chicago police detective Reynaldo Guevara. If approved, it would be among the largest wrongful-conviction settlements in the country.

The city's Department of Law plans to distribute the settlement over two years rather than in a single payment, according to the report. Alderman Raymond Lopez of the 15th Ward said he and 12 other aldermen had asked the city's top attorney to reconsider settlement policy, and the proposal has prompted debate over whether such payouts should be made in installments and whether recipients should face conditions.
