Blue Jackets Fall 4-1 to Mammoth in Home Opener as Schmaltz Hits 500 Career Points

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · City · GSM News

Columbus is a city in Franklin County, Ohio. The Columbus Blue Jackets dropped their home opener 4-1 to the Utah Mammoth at Nationwide Arena on Saturday night, October 3. Nick Schmaltz scored twice — including his 500th NHL point on a power-play goal at 14:13 of the third period — and Dylan Guenther had a goal and two assists for Utah (2-0-0). Mikhail Sergachev added a goal and an assist, Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley each had two assists, and Sebastian Cossa made 17 saves in his first NHL start, capping a whirlwind week in which the 21-year-old was waived, assigned to Hartford and recalled within days.

Kent Johnson scored the lone goal for Columbus (1-1-0) and Jet Greaves made 27 saves, but the Blue Jackets went 1-for-4 in penalty killing, surrendering three power-play goals. Defenseman Zach Werenski said penalties "killed us," lamenting an early infraction in a Saturday-night home opener against a team that feeds off puck movement. Utah, perfect through two road games, looks like an early-season force, while Columbus must fix its penalty kill quickly.
