Columbus Council Approves $2.5M for Storm Repairs as Barack Center Debate Continues

Columbus is a city in Franklin County, Ohio. Columbus City Council voted unanimously on Oct. 5 to approve $2.5 million to cover an emergency repair order signed by the mayor in late August. August tornadoes damaged the Barack Recreation Center and three other Recreation and Parks sites, including Busch Park, Berliner Park and the Fran Ryan Center. The mayor's proposed 2026 capital budget includes another $5 million to renovate Barack. Several councilmembers argued the capital budget deserves separate scrutiny rather than being tied to urgent storm cleanup. City officials said some costs may be reimbursed by insurance or FEMA, and they hope to finish repairs and reopen Barack to the community as soon as possible.
