Columbus Hits 87 Degrees on Oct. 13, Breaking a Heat Record Set in 1969

Columbus is a city in Franklin County, Ohio. Columbus reached a high of 87 degrees on Oct. 13, breaking the Oct. 13 record of 85 degrees set in 1969, which had stood for more than half a century, The Columbus Dispatch reported on Oct. 13, citing the National Weather Service's Wilmington office. A weather service spokesperson said the unusual warmth was driven by a strong ridge of high pressure over the Ohio Valley. Combined with abundant sunshine and clear skies, the pattern sent temperatures soaring well above average for mid-October.
The warm weather is expected to continue as rain moves in, and temperatures will swing sharply over the next several days, according to the forecast in the report. Wednesday, Oct. 14, is expected to reach a high near 82 degrees, with showers and thunderstorms likely after 5 p.m. and a 60 percent chance of precipitation. By Saturday night, after skies clear, the overnight low is expected to fall near freezing, although a chance of frost was not considered likely enough to include in the forecast.
