Waymo Begins Fully Driverless Rides in Detroit, Starting With Employees

Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. Waymo confirmed on October 6 that its vehicles are now driving fully autonomously in Detroit, carrying only company employees for the time being rather than public riders. The company said operations will focus first on downtown and nearby neighborhoods, then gradually expand across the wider metropolitan area. Detroit's identity as the heart of the U.S. auto industry gives the launch added symbolic weight. Waymo said it spent months learning local streets and talking with officials and residents, and will open public service once its technology and local operations are fully validated.
