Detroit Reports Across-the-Board Crime Drops Through 2026’s First Three Quarters

Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield and Police Chief Todd Bettison announced that every measured violent and nonviolent crime category fell in the first three quarters of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Homicides were down 18.0%, nonfatal shootings 9.8%, carjackings 21.5%, burglaries 15.5% and auto thefts 12.4%.
Summer figures showed juvenile homicide victims dropping from nine to one, about 89%, while overall homicides fell 25% and carjackings nearly 35% from June through August. City leaders credited the 10-week Occupy the Summer initiative, extended recreation-center hours, late-night basketball, community violence intervention groups and law-enforcement partnerships.
