Honolulu's Food-Scrap Recycling Program Goes Islandwide

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · City · GSM News

Honolulu is a city in Honolulu County, Hawaii (a consolidated city-county). Honolulu's environmental services department says its G.R.O.W. (Green Recycling Organic Waste) program went islandwide on October 1: every O'ahu home with the automated three-cart system can now put food scraps directly into the green compost cart.

City officials estimate O'ahu generates about 60,000 tons of food scraps a year. The program was previously piloted in Waipahu, Nanākuli, Hawai'i Kai, Mililani, Kailua and Kalihi. Residents are asked not to bag scraps and to freeze them until collection day to cut down on odor.
