Honolulu Makes MH-3 Mental-Health Crisis Response Permanent Across Oʻahu

Honolulu is a city in Honolulu County, Hawaii (a consolidated city-county). Honolulu announced that the Mental Health 3 (MH-3) initiative, launched as a pilot, is now permanent and expanding across Oʻahu. The program brings together the Honolulu Police Department, CORE outreach teams, behavioral-health professionals and homeless-outreach providers, and has assisted 150 people since launch.
Officials said Hawaiʻi’s Act 219 allows qualified individuals in behavioral-health crisis to be transported for an emergency psychiatric evaluation when specific criteria are met. MH-3 calls include a physician or advanced practice registered nurse, community health workers, EMTs and a designated mental-health emergency worker; HPD has also doubled its Crisis Intervention Team. Non-emergency requests can be submitted through HNL311. (Source: Office of the Mayor, City and County of Honolulu)
