Disaster Exercise Set for Oct. 23 at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport: About 125 University Students to Volunteer

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · Events · GSM News

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), in Honolulu County, Hawaii, will conduct a full-scale aircraft disaster exercise on Friday, Oct. 23, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced.

The exercise is the triennial drill required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to test the airport's emergency response protocols. It will simulate an emergency incident involving a commercial aircraft and evaluate interagency communications, coordination, response plans and rescue operations, including emergency rescue, triage, treatment, transport and the reunification of passengers with their families.

Participating agencies include Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighters, the FAA, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Honolulu Police Department, the Honolulu Fire Department, the Federal Fire Department, American Medical Response (AMR), the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, the state Department of Law Enforcement, Southwest Airlines, FedEx and the American Red Cross. Approximately 125 volunteers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene will take part as passengers in distress.

HDOT says all flight operations will continue as normal during the exercise and all safety precautions will be in place. The public is asked not to be alarmed by additional emergency vehicles and security personnel near the airport, and not to interfere with or attempt to assist the exercise. Questions may be directed to the HDOT Public Affairs Office at 808-587-2160.
