Houston Mayor Hands New Car Keys to UH Student Whose Vehicle Was Hit by Police Gunfire
Houston is a city in Harris County, Texas. Houston Mayor John Whitmire this week handed the keys to a new Honda Civic to University of Houston student Abigail Trujillo. Trujillo's vehicle was totaled earlier this summer after being struck repeatedly by police gunfire during a standoff, and she later filed a damage claim with the city.
City attorneys had said Texas law made Houston immune from liability in such a case. Whitmire said the city's legal department would review similar claims individually going forward, adding that city government's job is to serve residents and fix problems rather than leave an uninvolved resident to bear the loss alone.
