Houston Names 18 Initial Sites for Disaster-Recovery Generator Installations: DR24 Funds Cover Design and Equipment, With Procurement Timelines of 6 to 10 Months

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · City · GSM News

The Houston housing department, in Harris County, Texas, presented 18 initial eligible sites for DR24-funded generator design and installation to a City Council committee on October 20. A cross-departmental team in the mayor's office had met with public works, the General Services Department, fire and police officials to identify critical city facilities for generator installations.

Officials outlined procurement timelines averaging about six months to obtain equipment, with fire stations at roughly eight months and community centers at about ten months, depending on permitting and gas-line work. Staff emphasized that maintenance costs are not covered by DR24 funding and that some sites may require other funding sources for upkeep.

The 18 sites form a preliminary list of critical facilities, including fire stations and community centers that support emergency and public services during power outages. Design, equipment and installation are covered by the DR24 disaster-recovery funds. (Compiled from Citizen Portal's record of the October 20 committee meeting)
