Las Vegas' First Friday Festival Likely to Pause in November After Fatal Shooting of 15-Year-Old

Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada. Las Vegas' First Friday arts festival will likely skip its November gathering as city officials work on safety measures following a shooting that killed a 15-year-old, Mayor Shelley Berkley said Tuesday, according to Las Vegas Focal's October 13 report. Berkley discussed the matter during an interview at the IMEX trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The city is discussing the pause with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the city's Department of Public Safety and the First Friday Foundation, Berkley said. No end to the event has been announced. Berkley said the event is a fabulous one that the city is not ending, but that officials have to ensure it is safe for everybody.

Gunfire erupted Oct. 2 after a fight between two groups at the Arts District event. Police arrested a 17-year-old, alleging that he opened fire during an altercation involving two street gangs. A 15-year-old was killed.

Berkley said officials are considering several possible safety steps while First Friday is paused. She pointed to measures used to address crime on Fremont Street as a potential model, but did not detail a proposed plan or say when the festival might return. The monthly gathering brings artists, vendors and visitors to the downtown Arts District, and Berkley said the goal is to preserve the event while preventing violence.
