LA County Confirms 69 Rabid Bats, Tying Record; Health Officials Urge Caution

Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health warned on Sept. 28, World Rabies Day, that 69 rabid bats have been confirmed in the county so far this year, tying last year's record while peak season is still underway. Twenty-four cases were confirmed in August alone, and about 32% of bats submitted by residents that month tested positive. About 68% of this year's detections were in the Santa Clarita Valley, but cases have also been found across the county. Officials urge residents never to touch bats or wild animals, to keep pet vaccinations current, and to seek medical advice promptly after any possible contact.
