Los Angeles Launches Vacant to Vibrant to Turn Empty Downtown Storefronts Into Small Businesses

Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Los Angeles launched its first Vacant to Vibrant program on October 2, aiming to turn long-empty downtown storefronts into small businesses. At the launch, artist Charlie Alston signed a lease for a new gallery in the Historic Core, in a storefront that had sat closed for a decade.
The city is putting an initial $500,000 in federal community development funds behind the program, administered by the nonprofit Downtown Works, which matches property owners with small businesses and helps cover start-up and leasing costs. City officials note that downtown is just 1 percent of the city's land but home to more than 90,000 residents and generates 30 percent of city revenue.
