Los Angeles Clears 31,000 Catch Basins and Stages Sandbags Ahead of Potentially Historic El Niño

Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Los Angeles announced on October 5 that it is preparing citywide for a potentially historic El Niño this winter. City crews have cleared more than 31,000 catch basins and drainage sites, inspected and reinforced vulnerable hillsides and burn scars, and installed more than 13,000 feet of K-rail and sandbags, with added protections planned at 25 locations.
The city is prepositioning generators, pumps and other emergency equipment; the Fire Department is readying flood and swift-water rescue crews, and the Department of Water and Power will run outage response from its new emergency operations center. Residents are urged to sign up for NotifyLA alerts, clean gutters and drains, and pick up free sand and sandbags at fire stations if they live near burn scars or in flood-prone areas.
