Water Main Break Swallows Work Van in Los Feliz Sinkhole; 1938 Main Affects 31 Customers in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Los Angeles media reported on October 14 that, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, an 8-inch water main broke just after 11 a.m. that day in the 1900 block of North Normandie Avenue in Los Feliz, opening a sinkhole that swallowed the front end of a Spectrum cable service van. The pipe was installed in 1938, and the cause of the break is under investigation.
Spectrum spokesman Dennis Johnson said a technician working in the area was uninjured. LADWP said 31 water customers were affected, and Normandie Avenue was closed between Franklin Avenue and DeMille Drive for repairs.
LADWP said around 5 p.m. that the van had been removed from the sinkhole and repair work was continuing. One lane in each direction on Franklin Avenue reopened around 4:30 p.m., water service was expected to be restored to all customers by midnight, and street repair and repaving were expected to finish by 3 a.m. on October 15.
