Los Angeles City Council Unanimously Confirms Michael Chavez to Harbor Commission: 25 Years on the Waterfront, Succeeding Edward Renwick

The Los Angeles City Council, in Los Angeles County, California, voted unanimously on Tuesday, October 20, to confirm Mayor Karen Bass's appointment of Michael "Mickey" Chavez to the Board of Harbor Commissioners, where he will succeed outgoing Commissioner Edward Renwick.
Bass, who nominated Chavez, said he has more than 25 years of service at the Port of Los Angeles and comes from a family legacy rooted on the waterfront. "Chavez is exactly the type of leader we need on the Harbor Commission," Bass said in her statement. "With firsthand knowledge of port operations, a strong commitment to our union workforce and a deep understanding of our Harbor communities, I look forward to having his invaluable perspective on the Commission." Chavez comes from a family of longshoremen whose waterfront roots date back to the 1940s. He works as the nightside general foreman at Metropolitan Stevedore Company and previously served as president of the ILWU Southern California District Council. His experience spans container, bulk cargo, vessel and rail operations at the San Pedro Bay port complex, and he serves on the Harbor Community Benefit Foundation's Clean Ports advisory board.
With Chavez's appointment, four members of the Harbor Commission appointed by Bass — Chavez, Vice President Yolanda De La Torre, Sheila Lewis and Lee Williams — are residents of Los Angeles' 15th Council District, home to the port. The five-member Board of Harbor Commissioners oversees the management and operation of the Port of Los Angeles; commissioners are appointed by the mayor, confirmed by the City Council, and serve as volunteers. Chavez's term runs through June 30, 2027. (Compiled from MyNewsLA, October 20)
