Orange County Prosecutors Charge Vietnamese American Parents After 13-Year-Old Son's Fatal E-Motorcycle Crash

The Orange County District Attorney's Office in California announced on October 20 that Santa Ana residents Vu Thanh Nguyen, 56, and his wife Hong Cuc Thi Nguyen, 49, face criminal charges in connection with the May 7 death of their 13-year-old son Benson in an electric motorcycle crash. The father is charged with felony child endangerment and a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor; the mother faces a misdemeanor child endangerment count. He faces up to six years in state prison and she up to one year in county jail; arraignment is set for November 12.
Prosecutors say Benson was speeding, running red lights and doing wheelies on an E-Ride Pro SS 2.0 in Garden Grove when he lost control, struck the raised center divider and was thrown into a concrete pole. His phone location app showed 43 mph when he lost control; the model can reach 55 mph. Prosecutors say the father bought him the more powerful machine despite his reckless riding and a broken leg six months earlier. District Attorney Todd Spitzer said the case is part of his office's e-bike and e-motorcycle enforcement effort, which has charged 10 parents since January.
