Angels Decline Manager Kurt Suzuki's Contract Option After 62-100 Season, the First 100-Loss Season in Franchise History

The Los Angeles Angels, based in Anaheim, California, announced on their official X account on October 21 that the club has declined the option in manager Kurt Suzuki's contract, ending his tenure after just one season and launching a search for a new manager and coaching staff for the 2027 season.

The Angels finished the 2026 season 62-100, the first 100-loss season in franchise history, in last place in the American League West, extending their postseason drought to 12 consecutive seasons. The club has not recorded a winning season since 2015 and holds baseball's longest active postseason drought.

The change comes as the organization prepares for an ownership transition, with Kroenke Sports and Entertainment expected to take control of the franchise in early 2027, pending Major League Baseball approval. The Angels said they will work alongside the incoming ownership group to find the new manager and coaching staff. Baseball operations consultant and interim general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement that the team's record did not accurately reflect Suzuki's managerial abilities. The organization offered Suzuki the chance to remain as a special assistant, the position he held before becoming manager, and some coaching staff members have been offered other roles within the organization. As of Wednesday, the Angels had not announced a replacement or confirmed whether Suzuki will accept the special assistant role.

Suzuki, a former major league catcher, spent the final two seasons of his 16-year career with the Angels from 2021 through 2022 before taking over as manager. The next appointment will be the Angels' sixth full-time manager since Mike Scioscia departed following the 2018 season.
