Malibu Delays PCH Speed Camera Warning Period to November; Testing Logged ~100,000 Violations in 9 Days

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · City · GSM News

Malibu is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The City of Malibu announced on Sept. 29 that the warning period for its Pacific Coast Highway speed camera system will slip from late September to November 2026, allowing installation adjustments and a speed-limit study in Eastern Malibu to finish. Cameras are currently testing only: no warnings, no citations, and no DMV lookups.

From Sept. 16 to 24, testing at four locations recorded roughly 100,000 speeding violations, about 86 percent of them in Eastern Malibu. The system photographs rear plates at 11 mph or more over the limit; once activated in November, a 60-day warning-only period precedes civil penalties that carry no license points or insurance consequences.

More than 60 people have died on Malibu's 21-mile stretch of PCH since 2010, with speed a leading factor. State law allows the city up to five systems with 10 cameras. (GSM, excerpted from the City of Malibu)
