Miami-Dade Fare Hike Follow-Up: Improvement Fund Drained to Sustain Service, $1 Metromover Fare Weighed

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · City · GSM News

Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. GSM reported on October 7 that the Miami-Dade County Commission had voted 9-4 on October 6 to approve the county's first transit fare increase in 13 years, raising Metrobus and Metrorail fares from $2.25 to $2.75 effective January 1, 2027 (earlier report: Miami-Dade Approves First Transit Fare Hike in 13 Years; $2.75 From 2027). A follow-up report by the Miami New Times on October 12 detailed the funding arrangements and service cuts behind the vote; this article follows up on that reporting.

According to the Miami New Times, the county Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) still faces a multi-million-dollar funding gap despite the increase, and county officials have emptied the developer-backed Transportation Infrastructure Improvement District (TIID) fund to sustain services for another year. A Miami Transit Alliance tracker estimates that the 50-cent increase preserved more than $20 million worth of transit service.

Cuts will still take effect. According to county figures, six bus routes will be eliminated entirely and 34 routes will lose service after 10 p.m., affecting about 3,341 weekday riders. The county's original proposal was harsher - cutting 12 routes and all early-morning and overnight service - before Transit Alliance Miami pressed officials to save some routes. DTPW estimates the increase will generate about $9.2 million a year, preserving 13 routes that had been slated for elimination and maintaining late-night service on major corridors. According to 7News, a rider commuting round-trip daily would pay about $240 more per year.

Commissioners also directed the mayor's office to study charging for the long-free downtown Metromover people mover. According to 7News, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is expected to propose a fare of $1 per ride, with students, seniors and disabled residents exempt.
