Miami Advances Trolley Modernization; Electric Bus Conversion by 2035 Estimated at $56 Million

Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Miami Today reported on October 14 that the City of Miami is evaluating how to procure and manage future trolley services as it modernizes its aging fleet and moves toward electric transit. On September 24 the City Commission directed the city manager to complete a comprehensive market study, covering the existing fleet, operating costs, service levels and projected needs, before selecting a procurement method.
The city's longer-term plan is to replace its trolleys with battery-electric buses by 2035 at an estimated cost of $56 million. A December 2023 Trolley Efficiency Plan Study examined fleet conditions, fuel technologies and replacement options, when the fleet comprised 56 trolleys averaging about 25,971 miles a year each.
That study recommended battery-electric buses over fuel-cell buses, citing cost efficiency, established performance and wider charging infrastructure. Miami reinstated its trolley program in 2012 to provide free transit; electric streetcars first ran in the city in 1906 and ended service in 1940.
