City Council opens 2027 budget hearings with finance and public safety briefings
New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The New Orleans City Council recapped its first week of 2027 budget hearings on Oct. 2, noting that the Sept. 29 session covered a tax levy ordinance and briefings from Finance, the Chief Administrative Office, and Civil Service, while Sept. 30 brought presentations from the coroner's office and public safety agencies including police and fire.
Among the figures presented, the police department sought roughly $167 million in general fund support and the fire department about $127 million, with emergency management and juvenile justice officials also outlining staffing and operating pressures. Hearings continue in the coming weeks ahead of final adoption later this year.
