Ragtime Takes Over Decatur Street as Free French Quarter Program Links Music, Dance and History

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · City · GSM News

New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The French Quarter turned into an open classroom for New Orleans music history on Saturday, October 3, when the New Orleans Ragtime Festival presented a free afternoon program at the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center, 419 Decatur Street. The 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. event was presented by New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

Pianist Adam Rogers opened the program from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. A dance demonstration and mini class followed from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., before Steve Pistorius and The Southern Syncopators closed the afternoon from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program formed part of the festival's October 1-4 schedule of performances, dancing and history.

The setting mattered as much as the set list. The visitor center stands in the Vieux Carré, the original city laid out in the 18th century and still defined by Creole townhouses, courtyards and balconies shaped by French, Spanish and American influences. Ragtime developed before jazz rose nationally, and New Orleans is widely identified as a place where African, European, Caribbean and American musical traditions met.
