Two-alarm fire evacuates senior apartment building in New Orleans East
New Orleans is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. New Orleans firefighters responded at 7:55 p.m. on Oct. 4 to a fire at Peace Lake Towers, a six-story senior apartment building at 9025 Chef Menteur Highway, arriving within about six minutes and largely confining damage to the sixth-floor unit where the fire began. A second alarm brought extra crews to evacuate the entire building, including residents with limited mobility.
A woman from the unit of origin jumped from the sixth floor, landed in shrubs and mud below, and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, while a police officer who helped with evacuations was treated for smoke inhalation. Twenty units and 55 personnel brought the fire under control at about 8:31 p.m.; investigators listed an oven fire as the cause, and the Red Cross was called to help displaced residents.
