NYC Council and CUNY Launch Free OMNY Pilot for 700 Students

Wednesday, September 30, 2026 · City · GSM News

New York City is located in New York State. The New York City Council and the City University of New York have launched a pilot giving 700 students free, unlimited OMNY cards for subway and bus rides. Funded with $700,000 in the city budget, the cards activate October 5 and run through December 25 this fall, followed by 120 days in spring starting January 28, 2027. Eligible students must be enrolled full time, take at least two in-person classes, and qualify for Pell Grants. Council Speaker Julie Menin announced the program at City College, noting that transit costs push many students to drop out. For Chinese American families in Flushing, Elmhurst, Sunset Park, and Chinatown, the roughly $1,000 yearly commute bill could shrink dramatically.
