NYC's Click-to-Cancel Rule Takes Effect, With Fines From $525 Per Violation

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · City · GSM News

New York City is located in New York State. New York City's consumer protection agency says the citywide Click-to-Cancel rule took effect on October 1, targeting businesses that make subscriptions easy to start but hard to leave. Violators face restitution and civil penalties starting at $525 per violation, and the city has launched a new online complaint portal at nyc.gov/click-to-cancel.

The rule requires a straightforward way to cancel and clear disclosures when consumers sign up, and it covers free trials that quietly convert into paid plans. Citing outside research, city officials estimate the rule could save New Yorkers up to $162.5 million a year, making New York the first U.S. municipality to adopt such a rule.
