Philadelphia Fights Park Copper Theft with Aluminum Wiring

Monday, October 5, 2026 · City · GSM News

Philadelphia is a city in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (a consolidated city-county). Philadelphia Parks & Recreation held a press conference on Oct. 2 to address copper wire thefts that knocked out hundreds of streetlights over the past year, affecting Hunting Park, Bartram's Garden and other sites and forcing youth sports to practice in the dark. The city estimates citywide repairs cost millions, including about $800,000 at Bartram's Garden alone. The Streets Department is switching to aluminum cable worth roughly one-fifth of copper, adding anti-theft hardware, moving wiring higher, and developing alert software. Residents are urged to call 911 for theft in progress and use 311 for damaged infrastructure.
