Philadelphia Council Weighs Food Security Office and City-Run Grocery Study

Philadelphia is a city in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (a consolidated city-county). PhillyVoice reported that the Philadelphia City Council is considering a package of food-security legislation that would create a food security office led by a mayor-appointed director requiring Council approval and at least five years of senior leadership experience. The office would develop strategies on food insecurity and nutrition, coordinate food-access initiatives with private partners and collect data. The package also creates an advisory commission. Hearings will examine the feasibility of a city-supported grocery store to hold down food prices. Council President Kenyatta Johnson is among the plan's main backers.
