Portland Public Schools Unveils Plan to Close Up to 14 Schools

Portland is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon. Portland Public Schools released two draft rightsizing scenarios on October 5 as enrollment continues to decline. Scenario A would close 14 schools, including 13 elementary schools and Sellwood Middle School, with 38 boundary changes. Scenario B keeps three of those elementary schools open, closing 11 schools with 34 boundary changes. Both options move some dual-language immersion programs and convert several K-8 schools to K-5. District leaders say the goal is sustainable school sizes with stable staffing and stronger programs, not simply cost savings. The superintendent will recommend a final plan in November, the board votes in December, and most changes would take effect in fall 2027. Families should watch for community sessions and receiving-school assignments.
