Portland Councilors Introduce Fair Share Tax for Small-Business Relief

Portland is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon. Portland Councilors Angelita Morillo, Mitch Green and co-sponsors rallied outside City Hall on October 8 to introduce the Fair Share Tax ordinance. The proposal would exempt roughly 18,000 businesses earning under $500,000 from the city's Business License Tax while raising the pay-ratio surtax on publicly traded corporations whose CEOs earn 50 times or more than their median worker.
Sponsors project about $72 million a year in new general-fund revenue to protect parks, public safety, violence prevention and housing from historic budget cuts. The ordinance was introduced in the City Council's Finance and Governance Committee and now heads into committee and council deliberation.
