Pfizer Announces Manufacturing Layoffs: North Carolina Plants in Rocky Mount and Sanford Affected

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer confirmed on October 21 that it will cut an unspecified number of employees across its manufacturing operations. According to industry outlet BioSpace, a company spokesperson confirmed the layoffs by email that day but declined to disclose how many employees and which sites were affected, or when the layoffs will take effect. The spokesperson said Pfizer regularly evaluates its manufacturing network to ensure capacity is effectively utilized based on patient needs, projected product demand and long-term business objectives, and that the company has conducted a series of evaluations focused on operational efficiencies, with headcount reductions a part of that initiative.
BioSpace also noted a Triangle Business Journal report this week that Pfizer is laying off an undisclosed number of employees at its manufacturing facilities in Rocky Mount and Sanford, North Carolina. Pfizer is in the midst of a restructuring program and in August added $2.5 billion to its savings target, saying at the time that many of the savings were expected to come from technology and simplification efforts across its manufacturing, research and development and commercial operations.
