Two Hawks Shot in San Diego Area; One Dies, Another Treated by San Diego Humane Society

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · City · GSM News

San Diego is a city in San Diego County, California. San Diego media reported on October 13 that the San Diego Humane Society's Project Wildlife program took in two hawks found shot in September, in cases believed to be unrelated. A red-tailed hawk with a single gunshot wound arrived September 10 after being found in Indio; it was first triaged at the Desert Wildlife Center and later underwent orthopedic surgery with the humane society.

Less than two weeks later, a red-shouldered hawk shot with two pellets was found on the ground, unable to fly, in San Diego's Encanto neighborhood. It had fractures in a wing bone and its clavicle and was diagnosed with lead poisoning, and it died while under anesthesia for treatment.

Alexis Wohl, wildlife veterinary manager for Project Wildlife, said in a statement that hawks should be able to soar over neighborhoods without becoming targets. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said raptors, including hawks, are protected under California law and help control rodent populations.
