San José Fire Mobile Care Unit Begins Six-Month Community Paramedicine Pilot
San Jose is a city in Santa Clara County, California. The San José Fire Department began a six-month Community Paramedicine Pilot Program on October 1, 2026, with its Mobile Care Unit serving residents through March 31, 2027. Crewed by specially trained paramedics, the unit provides follow-up care in homes and neighborhoods and connects people to primary care, behavioral-health treatment, substance-use treatment, housing and social services.
The unit operates Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., initially serving downtown San José and areas around Fire Stations 1, 3, 8, 26, 30 and 34. It focuses on frequent 9-1-1 callers, people with behavioral-health or substance-use challenges and unhoused residents; participation is voluntary and does not affect access to emergency care.
