Seattle Chamber Survey: 68% of 700 Voters Say Economy Is Weakening as World Cup Glow Fades

Seattle is a city in King County, Washington. Seattle media reported on October 13 that the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce released the 11th edition of The Index, its semiannual voter sentiment survey, conducted by Fulcrum Strategic Group among 700 Seattle voters from September 23 to October 1. It found 68 percent believe the city's economy is getting weaker, 22 percent say it is staying the same, and just 10 percent say it is stronger.
The survey also found 96 percent of respondents say it is difficult for middle-class families to afford to live in Seattle, and 95 percent say it is difficult for small businesses to operate. Public safety ranked as the top concern, with 39 percent naming crime, drugs and safety as the most pressing issues; 77 percent said they feel safe downtown during the day, compared with 44 percent at night.
Chamber President and CEO Joe Nguyen said the FIFA World Cup brought real energy downtown this summer, but months later 65 percent of voters feel Seattle is losing positive momentum on public safety and quality of life. The Chamber's Quality of Life Index stood at 4.39 on a 10-point scale, down from 4.54 in spring.
