San Francisco Confirms First Flu Death of Season, Urges Vaccination

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · City · GSM News

San Francisco is a city in San Francisco County, California (a consolidated city-county). The San Francisco Department of Public Health confirmed on October 1 the city's first influenza-related death of the 2026-27 respiratory virus season. The patient was an adult, and officials released no further personal details. Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip urged residents to take flu and COVID seriously, noting both viruses are circulating. State data show 26 flu deaths in California so far this season. The department recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone age six months and older, and staying up to date with the updated COVID vaccine under California guidance. For Bay Area Chinese American seniors and families with young children, clinics and pharmacies across San Francisco offer appointments, and most health plans, including Medi-Cal, cover the shots.
