San Francisco Joins 26-State Coalition Suing Over Federal Fuel-Economy Rollback

Friday, October 2, 2026 · City · GSM News

San Francisco is a city in San Francisco County, California (a consolidated city-county). San Francisco's City Attorney announced on October 2 that the city has joined a coalition of 26 states, counties and cities suing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over its final rule, published September 28, that significantly weakens corporate average fuel economy standards for new passenger cars and light trucks.

The coalition argues the rule is unlawful: it departs from Congress's mandate to set standards at the maximum feasible level and ignores the millions of electric vehicles already on the road in its analysis, which plaintiffs say will raise fuel costs for drivers and worsen air pollution. The suit asks the court to rescind the rule and reinstate the prior standards.
