Oakland's Children's Fairyland Receives $5 Million State Grant for Upgrades

Monday, October 5, 2026 · City · GSM News

Oakland is a city in Alameda County, California. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee's office announced on October 5 that Children's Fairyland, the storybook park on the shore of Lake Merritt, will receive $5 million in California state funding for infrastructure, accessibility, and facility upgrades. The work covers play attractions, farm animal exhibits, puppet theaters, and the park's signature talking storybook boxes. The grant is part of a $14 million state package for Oakland that also supports small businesses, public safety, and transitional housing. Opened in 1950, Fairyland is a longtime destination for Bay Area families. The new funding closes Phase One of its capital plan and helps keep the park safe and welcoming, including for Chinese American families who visit from across the East Bay.
