BART Pilots Free Aira Video Interpreter Service for Blind and Low-Vision Riders

BART has launched a pilot of Aira, a video interpreter service for blind and low-vision riders, running from October 6 through January 3. Through the free Aira Explorer app, riders connect to a live, professionally trained visual interpreter who uses the phone's camera to describe surroundings, read signs, and help locate station entrances, fare gates, ticket machines, platforms and the right train.
Calls related to a BART trip are free during the pilot, anywhere in the system and around the clock; the project is funded by a Federal Transit Administration grant. BART says it will gather rider feedback and usage data to decide whether to seek funding to continue the service.
