Washington, DC Closes Section of Metropolitan Branch Trail for About Four Weeks of Resurfacing

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced on October 2 that a portion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail would close temporarily starting Monday, October 5, 2026, for resurfacing and pavement improvements. The closure runs from the Brookland-CUA Metro Station area north toward the Fort Totten Transfer Station and is expected to last about four weeks, through the first week of November 2026, weather permitting. DDOT said the segment is among the earliest built on the trail and needs restoration. During construction, pedestrians are detoured to the sidewalk on the west side of John McCormack Drive NE, while people on bicycles or scooters should use the roadway; those who use the sidewalk must slow down and yield to pedestrians. Detour signs are posted, and the parking lane on the east side of John McCormack Drive NE is temporarily closed for construction staging.
