Washington Awards $8.8M for Safe Passage Program to Protect Student Commutes

Saturday, October 10, 2026 · States · GSM News

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on October 9 an $8.8 million investment in the Safe Passage program to help students travel safely to and from school. Coordinated through the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, the program deploys community-based Safe Passage teams in priority areas.

Ambassadors monitor student commute routes and transit stops, work with schools, District agencies and neighbors to identify and de-escalate risks, and engage students, families, businesses and civic groups to support daily, on-time attendance. City officials say safer commutes help students arrive ready to learn.
