Shooting at a Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin Kills a Teacher and a Student, Wounds Six
A shooting took place on the morning of December 16 at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, in Dane County, Wisconsin. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said at briefings that day that officers were dispatched at about 10:57 a.m., and that the shooter was Natalie Rupnow, a 15-year-old student at the school who went by the name Samantha, who opened fire with a handgun in a study hall.
The shooting killed a teacher and a teenage student at the school and wounded six others. Two students were in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, while a teacher and three students had non-life-threatening injuries; two of the wounded were released from hospital that evening. Police said Rupnow died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead while being transported to a hospital; no officer fired a weapon. The 911 call was made by a second-grade teacher at the school, a detail police corrected the following day from their initial account of a second-grade student.
Barnes called it a sad day for Madison and for the country, said the motive remained under investigation, and said police believed the shooter acted alone. The school is a nondenominational Christian school serving kindergarten through 12th grade with about 390 students. Students were reunified with their families, and police said there was no ongoing threat.
President Joe Biden and the First Lady said they were praying for all the victims, including the teacher and teenage student who were killed and those who were wounded.
