Former President Jimmy Carter Dies at His Georgia Home at 100

Sunday, December 29, 2024 · White House · GSM News

The Carter Center announced on December 29 that Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, died peacefully that day at his home in Plains, in Sumter County, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100, the longest-lived president in American history. Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981 after serving as the 76th Governor of Georgia.

In the Center's statement, his son Chip Carter said his father was a hero to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love, and that the family shared him with the world through those common beliefs. The Carter Center said public observances would be held in Atlanta and Washington, followed by a private interment in Plains. Carter is survived by his four children, Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; his wife, Rosalynn, died in 2023. In February 2023 the Center announced that, after a series of short hospital stays, Carter had decided to receive hospice care at home instead of further medical intervention. He turned 100 on October 1, 2024.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement that America and the world had lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian. They recalled six decades of friendship and said Carter, with his compassion and moral clarity, worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocate for the least among us. Biden said he would order an official state funeral in Washington for Carter.

In a proclamation issued the same day, Biden formally announced Carter's death, ordered the United States flag flown at half-staff for 30 days at the White House, public buildings, military posts and naval vessels, and appointed January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning, calling on Americans to assemble in their places of worship to honor Carter's memory. Elected in 1976, Carter brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel while in office; after leaving the White House he founded the Carter Center in 1982, working on global health, election monitoring and conflict mediation, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
