Newsom Signs $2.5 Billion Relief Package for Los Angeles Fire Recovery

Thursday, January 23, 2025 · California · GSM News

In Los Angeles County, California, on January 23, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a $2.5 billion bipartisan relief package to fund emergency response and recovery for the Los Angeles fires. The legislation had passed the Legislature earlier the same day, and Newsom signed it in Pasadena alongside legislative and local leaders.

The funding is intended to expedite initial firestorm response and recovery, including emergency protective measures, evacuations, sheltering for survivors, debris removal and cleanup, post-fire hazard assessments such as flash flooding and debris flows, and traffic control. The package also provides $4 million, allocated by the Department of Housing and Community Development to impacted local governments, for additional planning review and building inspection resources to expedite rebuilding approvals, and $1 million in technical assistance to rebuild fire-damaged school facilities, including those of the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Pasadena Unified School District and impacted charter schools.

Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire said the $2.5 billion was a clear commitment that "we've got your back LA," calling it a down payment with support to continue for months and years. Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said lawmakers of both parties had moved with urgency, that this was a first step, and that they would stand with Angelenos until the work was done.

The disaster began with the firestorms that broke out in Los Angeles County starting January 7. The Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire in Altadena destroyed large parts of their communities, as detailed in GSM's earlier reports.
